Matt Leno focuses on providing clients practical legal advice for protecting technologies by harvesting, developing and leveraging IP rights in a strategic fashion to maximize return on investment.

At the onset of a matter, Matt analyzes his client’s portfolio, market position and competition in order to offer practical advice on how to efficiently develop and leverage its IP rights. He is committed to delivering value by creating litigation-ready patents and portfolio development solutions that take into consideration his client’s competition and the bigger picture of their commercial objectives.

Matt has represented clients in a variety of industries. His experience includes medical devices, dental devices, cellphone technology, semiconductors, internet, information filtering technology, data communications, data storage, tracking systems and software, lighting, air handling systems, energy recovery systems, manufacturing, chemical processing and consumer packaging.

Matt defends client rights in intellectual property litigation, including patent, trademark and trade secret matters, and conducts inter partes reviews before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board). He has also defended national law firms accused of patent attorney malpractice.

Prior to his private practice, Matt served as a patent examiner for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

  • Represented BlackBerry in two patent infringement actions involving patents asserted against Bluetooth communication technology (Wi-LAN v. BlackBerry (a/k/a Research In Motion Ltd.) (S.D. Fla.))
  • Represented Siemens Corporation in patent litigations involving product lifecycle management software (Sky Technologies, LLC v. Siemens (D. Mass.))
  • Represented Broan-NuTone LLC in two patent infringement actions involving Bluetooth communication and air handling technologies (Broan-NuTone LLC v. Homewerks Worldwide LLC (E.D. Wl) & Homewerks Worldwide LLC v. Broan-NuTone LLC (N.D. IL))
  • Represented MKS Instruments in three cases involving patents and trade secrets related to electronics and software for the process control of mass flow controllers and monometers (Brooks Instruments v. MKS Instruments (E.D. Tex. and D. Mass.))
  • Represented a major designer and manufacturer in a patent infringement action related to virtual reality equipment (Abarta, LLC v. Invensys Systems, Inc. (E.D. Tex.))
  • Defended a major apparel manufacturer against patent infringement claims related to the design and manufacture of wash and wear shirts (TAL Apparel Limited v. Esquel Apparel (W.D. Wash.))
  • Defended a major manufacturer of laparoscopic and arthroscopic surgical devices against patent infringement allegations (Davol, Inc. v. Allegiance Healthcare Corporation (D. Del.))
