OVERVIEW

Joseph D. Lewis was a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Barnes & Thornburg. He managed the trademark practice and also concentrated in the areas of copyright and computer software in the Intellectual Property Department.

Joseph advised clients on virtually all aspects of trademark law: selection and adoption of new names, marks, and slogans; registering trademarks throughout the world; maintenance of trademark portfolios; licensing and enforcement actions. He advised clients throughout the life cycle of a trademark and assisted them in formulating national and international filings, enforcements, and anti-counterfeiting strategies.

Joseph understood the pivotal role of trademarks in a company's business and employed these business factors when counseling clients. He advised clients on maximizing the economic value of their marks through the sale and licensing of their rights. When disputes arose, he represented clients in the appropriate forum: the courts, the Patent and Trademark Office, or through alternative dispute resolution.

Joseph appeared in federal courts from coast to coast, trial courts, and the Supreme Court and handled numerous cases before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Joseph guided clients in protecting and licensing works of authorship through copyright. These included works in the traditional creative arts, as well as the rapidly evolving areas of electronic media and software. He frequently evaluated and provided legal clearance in use of the copyrighted works of others.

Joseph received a J.D. with honors from George Washington University Law Center and a B.A. in mathematics from Hobart College. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia.
