D.C. Transportation Department Names Barnes & Thornburg Gold Ambassador for Its Commuter Program

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Getting a ticket to ride or cruising to work on a bike has been made easier for members of Barnes & Thornburg’s Washington, D.C., office and those employee benefits have earned the firm Gold Ambassador status from goDCgo for its commitment to providing transit and commuter alternatives.

An initiative of the District Department of Transportation, goDCgo will recognize Barnes & Thornburg and other local businesses at the goDCgo Employer Ambassador Awards Ceremony on April 3 at the Capitol View at 400 rooftop terrace.

Barnes & Thornburg encourages bike commuting by providing showers and lockers, and recently secured a bike storage room for employees. The firm pays 100% of the $500 monthly fee to provide a secure bike room.

Likewise, the firm also has a commuter benefits program that offers employees pre-tax benefits to ride Metro or take public bus transportation, including commuter buses. The firm’s benefits team continuously works to improve the system, make it more user-friendly, and is very responsive to the needs of employees.

“It’s a great honor to receive this recognition for our D.C. office for our commuter assistance efforts” said Roscoe C. Howard, Jr., managing partner of the firm’s Washington, D.C., office. “Management and staff have worked diligently over the years to develop strategies and activities that promote sustainable business practices and alternative transit.”

Additionally, the office has an electric car charging station in its parking garage. The firm also offers flex-time to hourly staff, which allows them to make up for up to two hours of leave per week.

Recognized businesses met various criteria for Gold Ambassador status, including distributing sustainable commuter information to employees; providing lockers and showers for bicycle commuters; posting of alternative commuter information on internal message and bulletin boards; installing electric car charging stations; benefits for cycling or walking programs; and pre-tax benefits for metro or bus transportation.
