Barnes & Thornburg Represents Political Aide, Jesse Benton, in Successful Jury Trial Verdict

WASHINGTON D.C. - A Barnes & Thornburg team, led by Roscoe Howard Jr. and Meena Sinfelt of Barnes & Thornburg’s Washington, D.C., office, recently represented Jesse Benton, former campaign chairman for Ron Paul’s presidential run, in a trial about reporting obligations under the Federal Elections Act. On October 22, Benton was acquitted by a federal jury in Des Moines on one count of making false statements to law enforcement.

Howard issued the following statement after the verdict was announced. “We are pleased to learn that Jesse Benton has been vindicated today of wrongdoing. The jury members worked diligently through the information presented to them and their decision reinforces that he was wrongly charged – and always has been.”

The case has received substantial media coverage, including comments made by Howard in The Washington Post’s article, Key Ron and Rand Paul adviser acquitted in Iowa corruption trial, the Hill’s Ex-Ron Paul aide convicted in campaign bribery case, and PBS Newshour’s 1 ex-Ron Paul campaign aide convicted, another acquitted. Comments also appeared in the Associated Press, CNN.com, the New York Times, the Washington Examiner, the National Law Journal, Iowa Public Radio and the Wall Street Journal.
