On Jan. 14, Rachel Lerman of the Los Angeles office was one of seven appellate litigators invited to address the Los Angeles court of appeal justices (all eight divisions of this district) on issues of concern to the bar and to clients. Among the issues discussed at the event, held at the appellate courthouse in Los Angeles, were provision of tentative opinions or focus letters to guide practitioners in presenting oral argument, making public unwritten rules and policies that vary from division to division, and policies concerning petitions writ relief, including stays pending appeal, which often result in post card denials. The justices later advised the panel that their remarks were well received and that the justices plan to implement some of the suggestions.
