William M. Lee, Jr. is retired of counsel in the Chicago office of Barnes & Thornburg, where he was a member of the Intellectual Property Department. He concentrated his practice on patent, trademark, and copyright solicitation, licensing of intellectual property, and litigation involving patent, trademark, and related antitrust and unfair competition matters.

William M. Lee, Jr. is retired of counsel in the Chicago office of Barnes & Thornburg, where he was a member of the Intellectual Property Department. He concentrated his practice on patent, trademark, and copyright solicitation, licensing of intellectual property, and litigation involving patent, trademark, and related antitrust and unfair competition matters.

Through 2011 he was listed among Illinois Super Lawyers'. He was also selected for inclusion in the 2013 and 2014 editions of The Best Lawyers in America' in the areas of intellectual property, patent and trademark law, and was recognized as a 2010 Leading Lawyers in Illinois by the Leading Lawyers Network

William's client work experience spanned a variety of industries and related business sectors, including but not limited to construction (concrete finishing, HVAC systems and building materials), and manufacturing (foods and spirits; furniture; plumbing fixtures, glass products made of strengthened or reinforced glass products; elevators, industrial molds and pump equipment). He also had experience in the communications, wholesale and retail trade and services industries. William's experience also included patents and trademark work within the computer software and telecommunications industry including networking, communications equipment, mobile devices, and data communication services, and computer-related credit card systems.

Both William's electrical and mechanical background allowed him to advise clients not only on construction equipment, electro-mechanical devices and data equipment, but also on digital communications applications, fiber optics, cellular antennas, and related mobile communications technologies. His counsel was sought by the medical services industry where he had particular knowledge on the uses and value of specific materials and solutions used in specific applications by medical practitioners relating to disinfection/infection control solutions and formulations. In particular, he was called upon to counsel on oral care, swabs, suction devices, and applications used to alleviate or help heal ulcers or prevent them in patients facing limited movement or bed sores. His experience included patent procurement and trademark work for medical, medical research, analytical instruments and surgical appliances and supplies products.

Within the industrial and manufacturing patent and engineering expertise arena, he was also called upon as an expert in certain types of heavy equipment, particularly concrete riding trowels. Other cases involved disputes involving the nature of specialized corrugated and other pipes used in culverts and by the construction equipment and engineering industry today.

William has been active in the Licensing Executives Society, chairing many committees, including the Meetings Coordination and Trademark Administration committees, and serving twice on the Board of Trustees, last as a Vice President. He also served many years as an International Delegate.

William received his B.S. and Master of Electrical Engineering degrees from Cornell University. He was elected to Eta Kappa Nu, the electrical engineering honor society. He received his J.D. from George Washington University.

William has been a member of the Illinois State and American Bar Associations, as well as the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago and The American Intellectual Property Law Association. He has been a member of the Patent Law and Practice (International) Standing Committee of the Intellectual Property Owners Association. In addition to his service to the Licensing Executives Society, he has served as chairman of the Younger Members and Seminar Committee of the Patent Law Association of Chicago, the Patent and Trademark Office Affairs Committee of the Patent, Trademark, and Copyright section of the Illinois State Bar Association and the Intellectual Property Law Section of the Illinois State Bar Association. He was secretary of the Patent Law Association of Chicago (now IPLAC).

William is admitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office bar. He is a Certified Licensing Professional (CLP).
