Timothy J. Abeska is a member of the Litigation Department in Barnes & Thornburg LLP's South Bend, Indiana office and a member of the firm's Management Committee. A partner, Mr. Abeska concentrates his practice in commercial and construction litigation, representing clients in federal and state courts. The focus of Mr. Abeska’s practice is construction claims, commercial litigation including business torts, commercial loan workout and bankruptcy litigation, lender liability defense, and transportation law. He represents clients at trial and on appeal, in arbitration, and in mediations. Mr. Abeska has been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® in the fields of commercial litigation (2005-2014) and construction litigation (2012-2014). He is a vice chairperson of the firm’s Construction Law Practice Group.
Mr. Abeska is admitted to practice in the states of Indiana and Michigan. He is a member of the American Bar Association (Litigation, Construction Law and Dispute Resolution sections), the Indiana State Bar Association (Appellate, Litigation, Creditors Rights, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Construction & Surety Law sections), the State Bar of Michigan, the St. Joseph County Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute, the 7th Circuit Bar Association, the Transportation Lawyers Association, and the Association of Transportation Law Professionals. He is on the Council of the ISBA's Alternative Dispute Resolution and Construction & Surety Law sections. Mr. Abeska is also a member of the American Arbitration Association, and arbitrates commercial and construction disputes under appointment by that organization.
Mr. Abeska is a charter member and past president of the Robert A. Grant Inn of Court, a local chapter of a national organization dedicated to the fostering of professionalism, civility, skill, and ethics in litigation practice. He often volunteers his time to assist with programs at the University of Notre Dame Law School. Mr. Abeska has served as a judge for moot court and trial advocacy competitions and is a regular guest lecturer at trial advocacy classes. He is a Life Patron Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, and a Life Patron Fellow and a former member of the board of directors of the Indiana Bar Foundation. He is currently a member of the board of directors of the St. Joseph County Bar Foundation. In 2011, Mr. Abeska was named a Distinguished Barrister by The Indiana Lawyer, which annually recognizes attorneys whose leadership, both in the legal profession and in extracurricular community activities, has been exemplary and had significant impact during their careers. In 2012, Mr. Abeska received an Indiana Bar Foundation President’s Award, in recognition of his support for providing legal services to the poor.
Mr. Abeska is a 1982 graduate of the University of Notre Dame Law School. He earned a B.A. in 1979 from the University of Michigan at Dearborn with a double major in political science and history. Before joining Barnes & Thornburg, he practiced with Roemer & Mintz, LLP in South Bend.
