Samuel C. Giesting, a partner in the Indianapolis office of Barnes & Thornburg LLP, helps clients implement strategies to protect markets for their products and to manage patent risks. Mr. Giesting regularly handles patent applications through their life cycle in the U.S. and abroad as part of his market protection activity. To help clients avoid patent risks, he advises on new product patent clearance providing opinions of counsel and supporting design-around activities when needed.

Prior to joining Barnes & Thornburg, Mr. Giesting worked as an engineer at Rolls-Royce Corporation. At Rolls-Royce, he worked on projects related to the testing and certification of gas turbine engines for civil and military applications. In this role, he prepared experimental engine assembly instructions, test plan check sheets for test cell operators, and test program schedules.

Mr. Giesting earned his J.D., cum laude, from Indiana University Maurer School of Law in Bloomington, where he was president of the Intellectual Property Association. During law school, he worked as a summer associate and law clerk in the firm’s Indianapolis office. As a summer associate and law clerk, he assisted in preparing, filing, and prosecuting patent applications in the United States and foreign jurisdictions.

Mr. Giesting earned his B.S., cum laude, in mechanical engineering from the University of Evansville, where he was selected to the Pi Tau Sigma mechanical engineering honor society and served as ombudsman for the student government association. As an engineering student, Mr. Giesting co-invented a wheelchair design for which he holds a patent.

He is admitted to practice law in the state of Indiana, and before the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana. Mr. Giesting is also registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
