Michael Boulette is an of counsel attorney in the Minneapolis office of Barnes & Thornburg. A member of the firm’s Family Law Group, Mr. Boulette dedicates his practice to litigating complex divorce and family law cases for high and ultra-high net-worth individuals and families. Mr. Boulette regularly handles divorces involving multi-million dollar estates, closely held businesses and family partnerships, intergenerational wealth and trusts, difficult valuation issues, fraud and concealed assets, and global wealth. Mr. Boulette’s clients include public figures, professional athletes, entrepreneurs, C-suite executives, as well as medical and legal professionals, and their spouses.

Mr. Boulette also assists as litigation counsel in high-conflict child-custody cases centering on allegations of abuse, alienation or serious mental illness.

In addition, Mr. Boulette regularly serves as a family law appellate counsel on cases before both the Minnesota Court of Appeals and the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Mr. Boulette’s experience includes:

  • Representing clients at the Minnesota Court of Appeals and Minnesota Supreme Court on matters including spousal maintenance; First Amendment free speech and religious liberties; third-party custody; dissipation of assets; business valuation; and custody and parenting time.
  • Representing real estate investors and hotel owners in valuation and division of property in excess of $50 million.
  • Negotiating spousal buy-outs on behalf of closely-held business owners and entrepreneurs to preserve business liquidity, profitability, and operational control.
  • Defending client’s interest in valuable irrevocable, family trust against claims for equitable division, spousal maintenance and child support.
  • Representing client in obtaining nearly $100,000 in relief after spouse attempted to conceal marital assets prior to and during divorce.
  • Representing successful medical professionals and their spouses in dividing interests in nuanced incentive plans and valuation and division of interests in medical practice.
  • Representing celebrities and public figures with divorce and other family law matters while maximizing clients’ privacy and limiting risk of public exposure.
  • Representing parents in complex child custody cases involving allegations of sexual and domestic abuse; severe mental illness; chemical dependency; and diagnoses of borderline, narcissistic, and anti-social personality disorders.
  • Representing business owner in successful contested motion to modify spousal maintenance obligation by nearly 60% after several past denials.
  • Protecting millions of dollars in clients’ inherited and premarital wealth through detailed expert tracing and discovery.
  • Representing client against spousal maintenance claim in excess of $1 million, resulting in complete denial of spousal maintenance after trial.

Mr. Boulette frequently comments in the media about issues involving divorce and child custody, having appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Fiscal Times, Forbes.com and the Star Tribune. He is a regular faculty member at continuing legal education seminars for judges, lawyers and mediators, serves as an adjunct law professor teaching family law at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, and authors Minnesota Family Law the state’s definitive practice guide on divorce, child custody, and family law.

Mr. Boulette has been selected for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America List and Super Lawyer’s “Rising Stars,” and rated AV Preeminent in Martindale-Hubbell. He has also been recognized for excellence by the Minnesota State Bar Association and the American Bar Association Young Lawyer’s Division.

He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of St. Thomas School of Law and his B.A. magna cum laude from Bowdoin College. Mr. Boulette is admitted to practice in Minnesota.
