Mari Yamamoto Regnier is a partner in the Chicago office of Barnes & Thornburg LLP. She serves as chair of its Japanese Services Group and is a member of the Corporate Department. Ms. Yamamoto Regnier represents numerous Japanese owned businesses in the United States and their parent companies in Japan. A large part of her practice focuses on clients in manufacturing sectors such as automotive, steel, machine tools, petroleum and other industrial products, as well as clients in the banking, trading and service industries. Her work spans a wide range of corporate areas including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, supply chain management, business transactions and management counseling in various areas.

In 1989, Ms. Yamamoto Regnier started her career with Barnes & Thornburg as its first Japanese Services Coordinator, assisting Japanese companies’ start-up operations in the United States. She was instrumental in locating industrial sites for major automotive plants, acquiring real estate, and hiring workforce to build and expand Japanese businesses in the U.S.

Ms. Yamamoto Regnier is a native of Japan and her unique language skills and understanding of the Japanese business environment are instrumental in providing clients with effective counsel and representation.

She is a frequent speaker for the Japan External Trade Organization, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Chicago and the Indiana Japan Chamber on a variety of legal topics pertinent to foreign companies doing business in the U.S. She conducts in-house training seminars for management both in Japan and the US. Her recent seminars include “E Discovery and how to prepare your companies for effective documentation and retention” and “Antitrust and competition law in the U.S.”

Ms. Yamamoto Regnier received her B.A. from Ochanomizu University in Tokyo with honors and an M.A. from the University of Wisconsin. She also attended Yale University in 1981. In 1992, she received a J.D. from Indiana University School of Law–Indianapolis. She is a member of the board of directors of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Chicago and serves as an advisor to the Indiana Japan Chamber and the Japan American Society of Chicago. Ms. Yamamoto Regnier is admitted to practice in the state of Illinois and before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
