John T.L. Koenig is a partner in the Labor & Employment Department of Barnes & Thornburg LLP. He maintains a national, full-service practice representing management exclusively in all aspects of labor and employment law.

Traditional Labor

Mr. Koenig represents companies in the grievance and arbitration process, collective bargaining, strike preparation, union organizing and election matters, and in unfair labor practice and representational cases before the NLRB. He frequently trains supervisors on effective and lawful communications during union bargaining, strikes, and organizing campaigns.

Employment Law

Mr. Koenig provides advice and counsel to companies to comply with laws such as Title VII, FMLA, ADEA, FLSA, OSHA and WARN. He works with company executives to develop and implement practical and effective HR and employee relations strategies to help avoid employee lawsuits. Mr. Koenig also defends companies before the EEOC, Department of Labor, OSHA, other administrative agencies as well as state and federal courts throughout the country. Mr. Koenig drafts executive employment, separation, and non-compete agreements and advises clients on safeguarding confidential, proprietary and trade secret information and goodwill.

Education

Mr. Koenig obtained his B.A. from Indiana University in 1990, where he was a member of the football team. While working for the Indiana Secretary of State and Governor, John pursued his law degree at night, and earned his J.D. magna cum laude from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1998. He is admitted to practice before state and federal courts in Indiana and Georgia.

Experience

Mr. Koenig previously served as co-director of the Indiana Election Commission for then-Governor Evan Bayh, elections deputy and legislative and public affairs director for the Indiana Secretary of State, and as outside general counsel to Indiana Governor Joe Kernan’s campaign. He has advised and worked on numerous other campaigns for state and federal office. Mr. Koenig has served on the boards of non-profits that help feed the hungry, and that seek to prevent child abuse and neglect. He regularly provides pro bono services to charitable organizations, and is active in many community causes and coaching youth sports. He has been honored with Sagamore of the Wabash awards by Indiana Governors Bayh and Kernan.
