Barnes & Thornburg LLP announced today that Michael A. Carrillo has joined the firm’s Chicago office as a partner in the Intellectual Property Department. Carrillo joins the firm from Neal Gerber Eisenberg LLP where he was a partner in the Intellectual Property and Information Technology Practice Groups.
Carrillo focuses his practice on representing and counseling individuals and corporations on patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret matters, and foreign and domestic patent and trademark protection.

Carrillo’s experience includes counseling established companies and start-up entities with respect to developing, managing and policing their patent and trademark portfolios. He has also represented large financial and lending institutions in preparing and negotiating licenses for online banking software and technology. In addition, he has significant experience in drafting various licensing agreements, including software license, outsourcing, web hosting, technology transfer, and distribution and supply agreements.
Carrillo often speaks to various audiences on topics relating to intellectual property, and he is admitted to practice in the state of Illinois, and before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Carrillo is a member of the International Trademark Association, and is on the board of trustees for the Hispanic Lawyer Scholarship Fund of Illinois.
Carrillo earned his B.S. from Purdue University and his J.D. from University of Illinois College of Law.
