Barnes & Thornburg's commitment to technology extends both to the services we provide for our clients and to the manner in which we provide those services. In 2000, the firm adopted key initiatives in both of these areas to better serve our clients.
First, the firm established the Business and Technology Group (BTech). BTech combines, in one multi-disciplinary team, decades of experience in key areas to provide smart, responsive, and integrated solutions to the many legal challenges across a variety of disciplines, including technology transactions, intellectual property protection, computer and software protection, internet business and technologies, venture capital and public offerings, options and equity compensation, labor and employment issues, strategic alliances and business combinations, telecommunications, insurance coverage, government services and lobbying, tax matters, and litigation.
Today's increasingly global economy, together with Barnes & Thornburg's growth in regional, national, and international markets, has demanded that firm maintain its leadership role in the use of information technology to meet its clients needs. This demand spurred our second major initiative. In 2000, Barnes & Thornburg became the first law firm in Indiana, if not the Midwest, to install a gigabyte backbone. Barnes & Thornburg's new information and technology center uses 3,300 feet of fiber optic cable to make up the gigabyte backbone; more than one mile of cross connects for the telephone system; 1,780 amps of power; 5,600 lbs. of batteries; and 10 tons of air-conditioning. The new information and technology center supports a battery of litigation and legal software and databases and enhances network support for a voice-activated video-teleconferencing system in each of Barnes & Thornburg LLP's offices.
