When Barnes & Thornburg LLP opened its Chicago law office in 1994, it had three objectives: to add unique new practices by drawing from the large talent pool in the city, to assist our existing clients, and to develop a significant presence in the largest city in the Midwest.
From one attorney in 1994 to more than 90 today, Barnes & Thornburg LLP’s Chicago office is following its strategic plan. In the competitive law firm world, lawyers are looking for something different – a collegial, democratic firm where they can service their clients better within the structure and backbone of a large firm while practicing in a mid-sized office environment. Barnes & Thornburg LLP strives to meet those goals at their offices in the new 48-story UBS Tower, facing Chicago’s famed Civic Opera Building. The office has grown based on this premise, attracting senior lawyers from large Chicago firms bringing new clients and a broader perspective to the practice of law in the office.
Mark Rust says our Chicago office is not a typical stuffy law office and is a nice blend of experience, service and value.

Located in the nation’s third largest city and financial center, Barnes & Thornburg LLP is at the center of the legal world, combining the sophistication of a large city practice with the personalized service of a Midwestern regional firm. This enables us to meet our clients’ needs, not only in the Midwest region, but nationally. In keeping with this pattern of growth, the firm merged in 2003 with the Chicago intellectual property firm of Lee, Mann, Smith, McWilliams, Sweeney & Ohlson, expanding its intellectual property practice to rank tenth in the nation among full-service law firms with more than 50 registered patent attorneys.
At Barnes & Thornburg LLP, we believe that commitment to the client’s success is of utmost importance. We are dedicated to helping our clients meet their business goals and solve their problems by providing timely services and experienced and creative legal counsel.
