Trisha Volpe is an attorney in Barnes & Thornburg LLP’s Litigation Department in the Minneapolis office.

Leveraging her award-winning broadcast journalism experience with her litigation experience, Ms. Volpe provides clients with a unique skillset and perspective on their litigation needs. Ms. Volpe represents clients a wide range of industries. She has represented clients in mass tort litigation, insurance recovery, contract disputes, and Freedom of Information Act and state data practices issues. Ms. Volpe also has experience in the areas of defamation and First Amendment law.

Ms. Volpe’s practice focuses on providing strategic communications counsel and training, helping clients navigate through complex communications issues related to litigation, developing case-specific legal communications strategies for all stages of the litigation, from developing themes to preparing witnesses and designing tools to deliver themes and messages at trial effectively. She is an attorney and communications professional who understands the power of strategic communication and visual storytelling in high stakes litigation.

As a journalist, Ms. Volpe has worked in newsrooms in the U.S. and Canada. Prior to joining Barnes & Thornburg, she was a reporter for KARE-TV, the NBC affiliate in Minneapolis-St. Paul, where she led a unique strategic partnership with Minnesota Public Radio. Ms. Volpe specialized in investigative reporting, enterprise reporting and in-depth storytelling involving complex and important issues affecting the community. While a reporter, Ms. Volpe covered many high-profile criminal and civil cases and provided depth and perspective to legal issues in the news.

Ms. Volpe has presented to local and national audiences on media issues and the law and effective communications strategies, including:

  • National Conference of Chief Justices - Panelist - Analyzed issues related to media coverage of state courts for an audience of chief justices and court administrators.
  • Minnesota District Judges Foundation Conference - Panelist- "Managing the Complex Criminal Case -Managing the Media."
  • Minnesota Judges Annual Conference2014- Panelist - "Savvy Media Management Strategies."
  • American Greed - Commentator - "Generous with Other People's Money," American Greed, Episode 55, CNBC.
  • Expert Witness Training Academy, William Mitchell College of Law - Faculty Member – Trained scientists from around the country to communicate effectively in a variety of settings including media interviews, Congressional hearings, depositions, trials.
  • FBI Leeds Law Enforcement Training Academy - Panelist for annual media training seminar – Taught high-ranking law enforcement officials about effective communication and developing positive relationships with media.

She was an adjunct faculty member for the Expert Witness Training Academy at William Mitchell College of Law. She helped launch a media resource list for attorneys and often teaches continuing legal education classes to attorneys on issues where the media, effective communications and the law intersect. While in law school, Ms. Volpe wrote an unpublished guide for reporters covering Minnesota courts and legal issues.

In the community, Ms. Volpe is a member of the William Mitchell College of Law Alumni Board, Minnesota Women Lawyers (MWL) and the MWL Equity Committee, the Ramsey County Bar Association and the Minnesota State Bar Association. She is a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and has earned two Midwest Regional Emmy awards for her work. Ms. Volpe graduated summa cum laude from William Mitchell College of Law and earned her Bachelor of Journalism degree with highest honors from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.
