Nigamnarayan (Nigam) Acharya is an of counsel member of Barnes & Thornburg LLP in the firm’s Atlanta office, where he is a member of the Intellectual Property Department.

Mr. Acharya’s practice is focused on securing patent, copyright, and trademark rights and counseling with respect to those rights. He has negotiated license agreements, conducted due diligence in connection with mergers and acquisitions, and provided numerous clearance opinions. Mr. Acharya has prepared patent certifications for Abbreviated New Drug Applications (ANDA). In addition, he has represented clients in trademark appeals, oppositions, and cancellations before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Mr. Acharya received his J.D. in 2001 from Emory University School of Law. He earned his B.S. with distinction with majors in political science, biochemistry, and molecular biology from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1998. Mr. Acharya is currently pursuing a master’s degree in chemistry at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Prior to law school, Mr. Acharya’s research experience included work in biophysical chemistry in which he studied the thermodynamic parameters of protein-nucleic acid interactions. He gained experience with techniques such as microcalorimetry, fluorescence, and nuclear magnetic resonance.

Mr. Acharya is admitted to practice in the state of Georgia and before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, the Georgia Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court of Georgia and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He serves on the patent and trademark committees of the Intellectual Property Section of the Georgia Bar, and is a member of the Patent Law (U.S.) Standing Committee of the Intellectual Property Owners Association.

Mr. Acharya also is active in the Indian community serving in various organizations that foster business relationships between the United States and India.
