Four new office additions and increased lateral attorney recruitment in 2009 have propelled Barnes & Thornburg LLP into the 100 largest law firms in the United States, according to a new national law firm survey released this week.

The National Law Journal’s annual NLJ 250 ranking listed Barnes & Thornburg 87th, up more than 20 spots from the firm’s 2008 ranking. At the time of the survey, Barnes & Thornburg had a total of 483 attorneys, an increase of 37 attorneys.

“The reason we have made such a leap is because attorneys around the country are increasingly attracted to our platform which can give them the ability to provide quality legal services to their clients at a better value,” said Barnes & Thornburg Managing Partner Alan A. Levin.

Barnes & Thornburg’s significant increase was fueled by a series of growth moves which added 70 lawyers to the firm in 2009, including:
  • Earlier in the year, the firm announced the opening of an office in Atlanta, its first in the Southeast, with the addition of highly-regarded attorneys Stuart C. Johnson and Jason A. Bernstein.
  • On the heels of the Atlanta office opening, noted labor and employment attorney William A. Nolan joined Barnes & Thornburg to head the firm’s new office in Columbus.
  • Barnes & Thornburg opened its 10th office in July by combining with the Parsinen Law Firm P.A. in Minneapolis. All 22 attorneys, including 14 partners joined, providing the firm with a substantial presence in Minneapolis.
  • In August, Barnes & Thornburg opened its newest office in Wilmington, Del. to better serve its clients in the state where most of the nation’s Fortune 500 companies are legally constituted.
In addition to office openings and merger activity, Barnes & Thornburg added 44 one-off lateral attorneys and new associates to its roster.

"It’s an exciting time for Barnes & Thornburg,” added Levin. “The firm’s financial strength and recent growth certainly run counter to the rest of the industry and that creates a significant opportunity for the firm and its expanding client base."

With nearly 540 attorneys and other legal professionals, Barnes & Thornburg LLP is one of the largest law firms in the country. The firm serves clients worldwide from its offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Delaware, Indiana, Michigan, Minneapolis, Ohio and Washington, D.C.
